Winner (2003)

Old meets new.

A distinct Spanish influence permeates this 1920s heritage-listed home. Akira homes added a family room to the existing kitchen area in the style of a conservatory and utilises large timber windows to let the natural light in. The addition takes in all of the features of the existing dwelling and blends in as an original feature of the house. It has not only given the owners increased space but improved the appearance of the existing dwelling.

There were difficulties with supporting the existing roof and ceiling without disturbing or damaging the original building. This was overcome by using LVLs instead of steel.

Akira Homes specialises in building homes and extensions on difficult sites. Established in 1995, the company builds prestige, quality residential homes and extensions.

Judge’s Comments
This house is a heritage-listed Spanish influenced home built in the 1920s. This addition is the extension of a family room from the kitchen at the front of the house. The builder has matched the materials and finishes and to his credit, it is not possible to identify where the new work joins the old.
